With the 2011 NFL Combine getting underway on Thursday, it was time to catch up with former Stanford and Cal standouts, Owen Marecic and Shane Vereen.

Say it with me now, Muh-ree-sick, made headlines during the fall for starting at both fullback and linebacker for the Cardinal, not to mention sporting a mass of hair that made even Clay Matthews jealous. Sadly – or thankfully, depending on how you see it – the long blond ponytail is gone, donated to Locks of Love. And Marecic has also given up playing both ways, choosing instead to focus on the fullback position.

Vereen flew under the radar in 2010, due to Cal’s less than stellar season, but is expected to have little trouble following in the footsteps of former Cal runners Jahvid Best, Marshawn Lynch, and J.J. Arrington in making a name for himself at the next level.

Four players from Cal and Stanford received invites to wear spandex, I mean, showcase their skills at this year’s NFL Combine in Indianapolis. Nabbing a bid is huge, with just over 300 given out to the thousands of guys that play NCAA football. Representing the Golden Bears will be safety Chris Conte, defensive end Cameron Jordan, linebacker Mike Mohamed and running back Shane Vereen. The Cardinal sends nose tackle Sione Fua, fullback/linebacker Owen Marecic, cornerback Richard Sherman and receiver Ryan Whalen.

The combine starts on February 23, ends on March 1, and is viewable on the NFL Network. Here’s hoping all eight Bay Area representatives shine in the best chance to show their stuff leading up to the 2011 NFL Draft. The draft takes place April 28-30 in New York City.

Kate and Nick are so excited about this Sunday’s NFL Pro bowl they decided to devote today’s entire podcast to the topic. Kidding. We’re kidding. The duo does touch on the game, but not before talking the NHL All-Star game, Monte Ellis’ All-Star worthy play, NCAA basketball, Tiger Woods at Torrey Pines, tomorrow’s Senior Bowl and potential Niners QBs to watch, NASCAR’s latest rule changes, and of course, Brian Wilson bringing down the house on Lopez Tonight. Are you a beard fearin’ Bay Area sports fan?

In other words, if you haven’t yet, it’s time to set the Tivo/DVR to record this Saturday’s Senior Bowl at 1pm on the NFL Network. (Be sure to check before thinking you don’t get this. I thought I didn’t, but apparently it’s part of most basic cable packages). I digress.

According to an article in this morning’s San Francisco Chronicle, Cal’s Jordan has caught the eye of a number of scouts, including – insert Al Davis voice here – the Oakland Raiders. Marecic, a two-way star at Stanford, is focusing on the fullback position this week. The guys in the know have told him he’ll have a better chance at getting noticed as a ‘back than a linebacker, so for the time being, Marecic is taking their advice.

Al Davis does it again! No, not scare women and children (although we’re sure that happened on Wednesday too). We’re talking about his verbal shlacking of former head coach Tom Cable in the process of naming his next victim, we mean, head coach, Hue Jackson. Good luck next year, Huey! Needless to say, Kate and Nick are talking Raiders football, along with the latest moves by Jim Harbaugh’s Niners. Then it’s a preview of the NFL’s Final Four, an NCAA basketball wrap, a Warriors and Sharks update, and a quick off-season check-in with the 2010 World Series champion San Francisco Giants! Are you ready to rock?
